The 2018 season opened with a bang. My nephew CJ and I had great success on the opening weekend of the waterfowl season bagging our limits of mallard, teal, widgeon and canvasbacks. A week later, Lisa and I had lovely day under the warm sun on the opening day of the upland season. We celebrated both events by feasting on our favourite dishes including teriyaki sharptailed grouse, pan-seared mallard, roasted canvasback, duck confit and ruffed grouse soup.
In late September, we welcomed our friends Jamie, Reynald and Aaron along with their dogs Nano, Gyda and Sophie to our hunting grounds in Manitoba for what we hope will be an annual Picardy Picnic. Our plan is to select a location each year — somewhere central to many of the new Picardy owners in North America — so that we can get together to chase birds, have a few laughs and enjoy watching our dogs work some wild birds.
Next year's destination is TBA....maybe one of the Dakota's? Montana? Minnesota?
Time will tell.
Snow in October is not unusual for Manitoba, but this storm came way too early. Nevertheless, we headed to the field and forest hoping that there were still a few birds around. We thought we may find a few ruffed grouse or sharptails but thought that all the woodcock and snipe would have flown the coop on the same north wind that brought in all the snow.
And while we didn't put up any woodcock in the woods, we were pleasantly surprised to see that there were still some snipe around. Lisa and I each got one snipe over picture-perfect points by Leo. Kolbi also had a good day pointing 3 sharpies. Unfortunately none offered a decent shot for us, so we settled for pan-seared snipe appetizers followed by Canada goose fettuccine bolognese.
No matter where they are from, hunters speak the same language.
