Ragnar Zeiss vom Fenriswolf

In early October we took Zeiss and Rooster for a goose hunt. It was Rooster's first time trying to retrieve big honkers and at first he was a bit reluctant. So I asked Zeiss to show the youngster how the old pros do it. And it worked like a charm!

Zeiss is a German-born, Long-haired Weimaraner living a life of love and hunting in central Canada. This video was taken during Zeiss's 15th hunting season, and as you can see, he still has a bit of pep in his step!

The hunt started out with the old boy looking for birds in all the rights spots and me just following along hoping for a point. But about halfway in, he turned downwind, switched gears, and went into tracking mode.

Ground scenting and tracking is not unusual for our dogs when hunting prairie grouse which tend to run before they fly, but there was something different in the way he was alternating between tracking and running, stopping and sniffing that made me think we were on to something other than sharptails. See if you can guess what ended up in our game bag.

Notes: Apart from the opening scene when I say "let's go find some sharpies", the rest is me blabbering in French. Pépé (pay pay) is what I call Zeiss, it means grandpa in French. Cherche apportes (shairsh a-port) means fetch and the rest is me just saying the equivalent of 'good boy'.
