According to a recent article in National Geographic “The total number of women hunters surged by 25 percent between 2006 and 2011, after holding steady for a decade, according to Census Bureau statistics. At last count, 11 percent of all U.S. hunters were women, compared to 9 percent in 2006.”
Up here in Canada, I‘ve been seeing more women hunters lately, with my wife being the most recent (and beautiful) to join the ranks. And just this past weekend, I had the pleasure of spending time in the field with a mother and son as they enjoyed their first hunt together. The youngster proved to be an excellent shot, crumpling his very first sharpie at 35+ yards over my LH Weim‘s point. The next morning, he and his mom were in the right spot at the right time to take some huge geese.
In late September 2000, Souris-Manon retrieved her first Blue-winged Teal. For some reason (laziness?) I didn’t have my camera with me at the time, but I remember the event like it was yesterday.
Since then, I’ve lost count of how many Teal — and other delicious birds — Souris has fetched for us, but on September 12, 2015, I had my camera with me and snapped this shot of the old girl delivering our supper. And in case you are wondering if this will be the last bird she fetches before retiring, the answer is no. We‘re heading out again tomorrow. September’s here again.
I spent a fantastic morning in the marsh with my nephew CJ and LH Super-Weim Ragnar Zeiss vom Fenriswolf. There were lots of ducks around, including one that was so tone-deaf, it actually came to my duck call! My shooting was, as usual, sub-par but the dog work and companionship were great. Here’s a quick video of me doing my thing — squawking like a love-sick toad and missing more than half my shots — and Zeiss doing his thing, fetching ducks.
We started the year in the marsh. Opening day CJ and I limited out on mallard, teal, gadwal and widgeon. Day two, Lili joined us and bagged a mallard, a gadwall and a widgeon!
