Lisa and I spend a lot of time in the field chasing game. For years, I carried a shotgun to put meat on the table and Lisa carried a Canon to put photos in our picture albums. Then, last February, she said: “I think I’m ready to be a ‘real’ hunter now.” So she purchased a sweet side by side at a local shop and had it fitted.
As soon as the snow melted, Lisa began to practice her shooting skills, shooting clays out at our cabin, and at the local trap and skeet club. Then, over the summer she studied and prepared for the hunter’s safety test and passed it in August with a grade of 100% ! And finally, just two days before the season opener, Lisa got her very first hunting licence at the age of … (redacted by order of management).
To prepare for the upcoming season, Uma got a haircut (and a neat new tie from the salon!), Souris did a bit of yard work to loosen up the old joints, and Henri and Zeiss did a lot of water work to stay cool. On the eve of opening day we went scouting. Near dusk, we found the perfect spot to hunt the next morning. There were tons of ducks and the Great Manitou gave us a sign that we were all in for a fantastic season.
And he was right! Henri rocked it in the marsh.
And with his buddy Zeiss, he rocked it in the field.
Uma and Souris had a ball!
And when the dogs slammed on point, Lisa was quick to get into position.
And afterwards, to dream.
Of a huntress, a hunter, and their dogs. Hunting in the land of the Great Manitou.
