With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our wonderfully quirky, always hungry and forever eager to hunt Pont-Audemer Spaniel, Uma. I will write more about her in the days to come, but for now, let's revisit some of the photos and comments I published for her 14th birthday, only a short month ago.
Here are what some of Uma's greatest fans had to say about her:
Yannick Moles introduced us to the Ponto breed and brought our Uma to us from France in 2003. We will forever be grateful to him for bringing her into our lives. 14 years ago I was packing my bags to travel to your place for 3 fantastic weeks hunting. Thank you for your hospitality, for the infinitely rich experiences and hunting adventures, specifically our encounters with scolopax minor and our voyage to the plains of Saskatchewan where we had an awesome chicken hunt. Hugs and kisses to you both and above all happy birthday to Uma.
Marjolein Kamman-van Eijk, Dutch huntress extraordinaire who calls Uma by one of her many nicknames ( 'Kip' means chicken in Dutch) had this to say: The moment you see her, you fall in love with her. No question about it. It's her funny little face with that clown-esque expression of hers. And then she starts hunting. She gets a very serious look on her face and does everything in her power to find those birds for you. Kip is one helluva bird finder and an even better companion! Kip rulez!
Uma's human cousin CJ who has had the pleasure of hunting everything from woodcock to pheasants over Uma wrote: I am happy to have had the opportunity to hunt over Uma! She is the happiest dog ever in the field, bouncing around. It has been awesome to watch her grow into a solid hunting dog. Although a bit of a late bloomer, now she is absolutely awesome to hunt over. She would also trade her soul for the crumbs off your plate and is one of the coolest looking dogs out there. I love playing with Uma even when she's runnning away from me in the dark at 2 a.m. with my broken back or when she wakes me up at 4 am for Frühstück. You cannot help but look at her and fall in love.
German super-hero Weim breeder Tanja Breu-Knaup said: Hunting with Uma was funny! This little crazy dog with a fast movement and an interesting kind of pointing. I believe she loves hunting snipe in Lili-woods most of all. I found it interesting that she was not interested at all in any big game that came our way. She only wants to hunt birds. And I will always remember cleaning the burrs out of her topknot and ears for two hours one day. She just lay there, so friendly and kind. And then I remember that she is French, very French!
Camille Rice, another super-hero Weim breeder wrote: The first time I met Uma was during a visit to Manitoba in 2011. We had never seen a Ponto and were very interested in meeting one and seeing one hunt. Our hunting host introduced us to his darling little Ponto, Uma and we were charmed by her looks. However, I wondered about what the hunting style was from such a crazy looking girl. Needless to say, we were blown away at her hunting abilities! We are big fans of Uma the beautiful Ponto! Happy birthday Uma!!!
